The SSS-CORE is an general-purpose operating system for network of workstations (NOW) and distributed-memory multiprocessors. By kernel/user cooperations, the OS realize the multi-user/multi-job environment in which user applications is executed efficiently in parallel. In parallel systems, overhead caused by user-level inter-processor synchronization and communication is the biggest impediment to efficient execution of parallel programs. Therefore, user-level high-speed synchronization and communication are key techniques even in the SSS-CORE system. The SSS-CORE system presents memory-based communication and/or synchronization facilies whose consepts were proposed in Strategic Memory System (SMS) using Memory-Based Processors (MBP). These facilies in the SSS-CORE are implemented whithout special communicatin-dedicated/synchronization-dedicated hardware like MBPs. In this paper, memory-based communication and/or synchronization facilies of the SSS-CORE system in NOW are briefly introduced with discussions on convetional problems and its solutions in the SSS-CORE.
